Run, the first book in this YA zombie apocalypse novel trilogy by Gabby Tye, is a turn-the-page thriller. I loved it... and I don't do zombie!
I Am Still Alive is a YA novel (which I didn't realize until I was well into it) about a girl who's lost everything and has to go live with her estranged father literally in the middle of the wilderness in Canada. There are no roads or cars... only a plane that shows up occasionally to get in and out.
In the spaces of these fiery pages, we deal with motherhood, abortion, racial relations, socioeconomic issues, what it means to be an artist, living your dreams or dealing with those you never fulfill, teenage angst and drama, sibling relationships, abandonment, adoption, ethical and moral issues...
I was riding on the MRT, the public train in Singapore, reading Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel when suddenly the typically smooth train started making a screeching noise that hurt my ears.
